Black Pit firing

These ceramic pieces were hand built with white clay and then black pit fired. There are two figures shown here (a pumpkin and a turtle), as well as a pinch pot. The black pit firing process is essentially firing the ceramics in an open bonfire or pit. Because of the lower temperature, the pottery is more porous. These examples were pit fired and not glazed so they have a very unique coloring.
